Off Season Activity

Prospect Tourney Team

It has been a rather eventful off season for the Transcona Railers so far.  With a great turnout of both players and fans, the Railers competed in the Pembina Valley Twisters prospects tournament at the end of May.  There were some surprises with the on ice product as some players performed far better than expected.  At the end of the tournament, new Head Coach Terry Cyr and the team executive walked away pleased and excited about the future of the Railers program.  Myles Nykoluk led the team offensively in the tournament and show some great imagination with the puck.  On the back end, Dillon Hockin showed that he has no problem getting involved physically and should be a mainstay on the Railers blueline for the next four years.

Just prior to the tournament, the Railers made a rather big deal with the St.Boniface Riels, sending 21 year old forward Tristan Nohlgren and 21 year old veteran defenseman Corey Waver to the Riels for two rookies.  Coming back to the Railers were 18 year old forward Tyler Fehr who brings speed and a great work ethic to the team and 18 year old defenseman Dillon Hockin who will bring a big body presence to the Railers back end.  The Railers felt they couldn’t go into a rebuilding season with seven 21 year olds on the roster which is what they potentially had returning, and this is probably not the last move the team will make this offseason.

The Railers continued to finalized their coaching staff adding Marc Babaluk as one of Terry Cyr’s new assistants. Marc was an assistant coach with the St.Boniface Riels for the past two seasons and shows a great passion for the game as well as being very knowledgeable about systems and special teams play.

Terry Cyr hired as Railers Head Coach

Terry Cyr

Terry Cyr is a proud resident of Transcona and has taken over Head Coach of the Railers effective April 2010. Terry looks forward to working closely with Railer Management to rebuild a program that is well respected in the community and the MMJHL.

Terry is an alumni of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame where he represented Saskatchewan at the Air Canada Cup, Canada’s National Midget Hockey Championship. He went on to win the MVP of the Norman Junior Hockey League in his junior hockey rookie year and then played with the St.Boniface Saints of the MJHL where he amassed 144 points in 47 games played in only his second year of junior hockey. Terry was awarded a 4 year Hockey Scholarship to Ferris State University at the Division 1 NCAA level.

Playing at a high level with several players who went on to NHL, AHL and European playing careers and for Olympic level and US College level coaching allowed Terry to learn and understand the game at a high level as well as experience first-hand what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

In addition to playing at high levels and being coached by Olympic level coaching, Terry owned and operated a successful Summer Hockey Clinic which operated in Transcona, East Kildonan and Selkirk for 11 years where summer enrollment exceeded 450 participants; Superior Hockey Clinic.

Terry brings a hardworking and dedicated attitude to our organization; his coaching philosophy focuses on developing a structured and disciplined environment while emphasizing the integrity of the program and team.

Darryl Martin on his new Head Coach …

Terry had the perfect mix of playing and coaching experience.  The fact that he has played at such a high level will command respect from the boys from day one.  He’s a local Transcona guy, and we want to be able to build this program from the grassroots level, it starts right now with Terry.  He is in touch with the guys at this age level and we are expecting big things moving forward.

Season Finale

The Railers visited the Stonewall Jets Friday night to put an end to a season that fell far below expectation.

The season finale did the same. In a game that meant nothing to the Railers, but could cement the Jets in 7th place, the effort put forth was an exclamation point on a poor season.  The Railers were down by scores of 1-0, 7-0 and in the end 11-0 in a very one sided affair. Changes will obviously have to be made in the off season to continue on a rebuilding pattern that started this season.

The Railers have alot of young players who will be expected to step up their games next season.

The Transcona Railers would like to thank all of their supporters for sticking with us through this tumultuous season and look forward to seeing you in September. The Railers would also like to wish all of the MMJHL playoff teams good luck as they enter the post season.
